ARTS & CULTURE EDMONTON | Chilean Cantatas | Feb. 25, 2017 |

CULTURE | CANTO para una Semilla & CANTATA Santa Maria de Iquique | February 25, 2017 – Royal Alberta Museum, 12845-102 Avenue, 7:00pm. Tickets: $25.00. For tickets & information, call: 780.934.4605 (or) 780.850.4915.

A Song for a Seed & The Siege of Santa Maria de Iquique. Colectivo 97 of Edmonton Presents: An Evening of Chilean Song. Featuring two of the most important musical compositions in Latin American music history. This event is proudly supported by the Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

About Colectivo 97: Colectivo 97 is a blend of three generations of musicians who cultivate the folk music of South America in its various expressions. Members of Colectivo 97 have combined their musical talent, experience and knowledge to put together these two musical cantatas to pay tribute to the art and legacy of Chilean poet, composer, folklorist, and visual artist, Violeta Parra, and to also remember a historical industrial dispute that ended with the massacre of nitrate miners in the northern Chilean city of Iquique in 1907.

Context: both compositions/cantatas were done by Chilean composer Luis Advis in 1969 and share a common message of social justice, love/hope for a better & more just future for all. The ensemble of musicians performing today brings together community members from several countries of origin and various professions/trades, who share a love for popular art that comes from the people to the people. Assembling these two cantatas has been the fulfillment of a dream for the musicians, readers, and technical team of Colectivo 97. As with any art project, preparation of this work was full of diverse challenges as well as moments of beauty. Join us in solidarity – Colectivo 97.
